The office of Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown reached out to the Central Ohio Worker Center to speak on behalf of workers who deserve paid sick leave in a press conference on September 10. Following President Obama's legislation to ensure paid sick leave for workers under federal contracts, Sen. Sherrod Brown has cosponsored the Healthy Families Act which would extend paid sick leave to all workers.
Nicholas Pasquarello, a COWC member spoke as a restaurant worker who has had to work days when he was sick. “It takes a lot for me to even call in … I have to be feeling really bad,” Nicholas said. “In the past year there’s only been two times I’ve really felt that under the weather. Both times I was told to basically suck it up, I need to come in and I need to work.” Since Nick is in the food industry, he said when he comes in when he’s sick he not only risks making his coworkers sick, but also customers. “It’s self-defeating in a sense, It’s disheartening to know I had to go in not feeling well with all those risks at play.”
That workers should have to choose between a day's pay, their health, the health of their coworkers, and even their customers is an injustice that COW stands against.
The press conference was attended by many Ohio media outlets and gained circulation in the Sandusky Register, LimaOhio.com, Logan Daily News, Sidney Daily News, and Galion Inquirer.
